Rangeland management school in Lyman Feb. 17-18

The Wyoming section of the Society for Range Management (WY SRM) will present a Rangeland Management 501 School Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 17-18, at the Lyman Town Hall in Lyman.

The school is being hosted by the Uinta County Conservation District. Instructors for the school will be University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service (UW CES) educators and specialists, U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service and Natural Resources Conservation Service personnel, and Uinta County’s Weed and Pest Control District supervisor.

The Rangeland Management 501 School is the capstone of the series of schools offered by the WY SRM. Participants can learn:

* how rangeland vegetation responds to prescribed fire;

 * about invasive weeds impacts and their management;

* how riparian areas and watersheds function to understand management options;

* how to manage grazing to improve streams;

* about livestock and wildlife interactions and their habitat needs;

* about tools to improve livestock distribution;

* about sustainable livestock management systems; and

* how the state and transition ecology model can be used to manage grazing for improved range condition.

The school will conclude with attendees participating in a hands-on exercise in how to develop a grazing management plan.

Cost for the school is $20, which covers the notebook that contains handouts from all the presentations and other pertinent information. Attendees will also receive the newest version of the Wyoming Rangeland Monitoring Guide. A version of the guide is available for free download at www.wy.nrcs.usda.gov/technical/rangemgt/range.html. Scroll to the bottom of the page, and click on the Wyoming Rangeland Monitoring Guide link.

Lunch both days will be provided by the Uinta County Conservation District at no extra charge.
