rangeland managementOne-day rangeland management course in Worland Dec. 17

Rangeland Management 101 School – a one-day introduction to the art and science of range management – is being presented in Worland by the Wyoming Section of the Society for Range Management.

The school is Wednesday, Dec. 17, at the Worland Community Center Complex, 1200 Culbertson Ave. The event is hosted by the Washakie County Conservation District. Registration is 8-9 a.m. with sessions from 9:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Lunch is noon to 1 p.m. and is provided by the district, said Blaine Horn, University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service (UW CES) educator.

For an online brochure, see http://ces.uwyo.edu/rangemgt/WashakieCounty101RegistrationBrochure.pdf. Presenters are UW CES educators and specialists. Sponsors are the CES, Bureau of Land Management, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, the U.S. Forest Service and Wyoming Department of Agriculture.

The school includes presentations on how plants grow, time and timing of grazing, animal nutrition and behavior, monitoring methodologies that can be used on private and federally owned rangelands, applied grazing management and management strategies to deal with drought.

Fourteen schools have been held throughout the state since June 2004 with more than 450 attending including ranchers, federal and state land managers, educators, students and interest groups. Comments on course evaluation forms indicate the schools were well received and attendees increased their knowledge of the principles of range management, said Horn.

Cost for the school is $20, which includes a notebook that contains handouts from all the presentations, other pertinent information and lunch. Attendees will also receive the newest version of the Wyoming Rangeland Monitoring Guide. A copy of the guide is available for free download at www.wy.nrcs.usda.gov/technical/rangemgt/range.html.
