Park County courses teach Wyoming climate, soils, vegetation
A three-part University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service (UW CES) short course offered in Cody and Powell in September will teach students about Wyoming climate, soils and vegetation.
“The goals of the short course are to provide information about climate, soils and plants, and to promote understanding of the challenges of desert living in Park County,” said Sandra Frost, UW CES crop systems educator for northwest Wyoming.
“Information from the short course will assist landowners in planning development of their acreage,” she added.
Cody sessions are 10 a.m. to noon in the Alternate EOC room in the basement of the Park County Courthouse. Powell sessions are 7-9 p.m. in the extension meeting room at the Park County Fairgrounds.
In the first session, “Wyoming Climate,” Monday, Sept. 8, Frost will discuss geography, precipitation, temperature, snowfall, data collection and a comparison of Powell to Cody.
During the second session, “Wyoming Soil,” Wednesday, Sept.10, Frost will provide an introduction to Wyoming and Park County soils that includes physical and chemical characteristics of soils in an arid environment.
The third session, “Wyoming Plants,” on Friday, Sept. 12, will provide scientific information on how plants adapt to Wyoming climate and soils. Students will learn why selecting adapted ornamental or native plants leads to more successful landscaping.
A registration fee of $20 is payable at the first session. Students may take individual classes for $10 each. To register for the short course, call (307) 754-8836 or (307) 527-8560. For more information contact Frost at (307) 754-8836 or sfrost1@uwyo.edu.
