Roundup Ready sugar beet and grass seed research and biodiesel crop production are part of the research trials the public can tour and discuss during an educational field day Tuesday, July 10.
The tours are 9 a.m.-noon at the University of Wyoming’s Powell Research and Extension Center (PREC).
The field day is an opportunity for growers, University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service educators and UW scientists to visit with each other and tour several ongoing research plots at the center, said Abdel Mesbah, PREC director. The tour will be followed from noon to 2 p.m. by a retirement reception for Alan Gray, former PREC director.
The schedule includes:
8 a.m. – Registration, doughnuts, and coffee
9 a.m. – Welcome and introduction – Mesbah; Frank Galey, dean, UW College of Agriculture; Stephen Miller, associate dean and director, UW Agricultural Experiment Station; Gray.
9:30 a.m. – Tour of PREC research plots.
- Roundup Ready sugar beets. Roundup rate, number and time of applications, preplant and layby herbicides and cultivation practices.
- Grass seed and hay production. Performance of several warm- and cool-season varieties.
- Biodiesel crops. Performance of several canola and camelina varieties.
- Alternative crops. Performance of several varieties of Roundup Ready and conventional soybeans, field peas, chickpeas, lentils, and sunflower.
- Soil fertility in sugar beets. Nitrogen rate, placement and formulation.
- Sainfoin seed production. Shoshone sainfoin variety yield performance.
