UW develops concurrent majors in agriculture and education

Four concurrent majors have been developed and are now shared by the University of Wyoming colleges of agriculture and education.

The concurrent majors with agricultural education are in agricultural business, agricultural communications, animal/veterinary sciences and rangeland ecology/watershed management.

“Graduates with concurrent majors can market themselves as secondary teachers with a core specialization in one of the four agricultural majors they choose,” said Jim Wangberg, associate dean and director of the Office of Academic and Student Programs in the College of Agriculture.

“The changes made represent improvements in the curriculum, new opportunities for students and greater collaboration between the two colleges,” Wangberg said.

Concurrent major requirements range from 123 to 128 credit hours and provide the necessary courses for teacher certification as well as meeting department requirements in the selected agricultural major.

Twenty agricultural education students have already declared a concurrent major. Each has a primary academic adviser in the College of Education and a secondary adviser in the College of Agriculture, said Christi Hutchison, academic advising coordinator in the College of Education’s Office of Teacher Education.

“We are very excited at the opportunities the concurrent major programs provide to the students while they attend classes and upon graduation,” Hutchison said. “If students would like additional information as to the opportunities in agricultural education, they can contact the Office of Teacher Education.”

The number is (307) 766-2230.
