UW extension offers Wyoming Master Cattleman Program in five locations

The Wyoming Master Cattleman Program is entering its third year of preparing ranchers with decision-making tools and enhanced production and marketing strategies.

“The program will be offered in five locations this year to make it available to even more producers,” said Bridger Feuz, a University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service (UW CES) educator and the program’s coordinator.

Locations and starting dates for the programs are:

            Worland – Wednesday, Jan. 14

            Wheatland – Tuesday, Jan. 27

            Sheridan – Thursday, Jan.  29

            Lander – Thursday, Feb. 12

            Lyman – Wednesday, Feb. 25

The program consists of eight weekly three-hour sessions. Topics are goals and risk management, enterprise analysis, cull cow management, retained ownership, alternative calving strategies, niche marketing, bull buying tools and estate planning.

Tools sessions help producers analyze goals and risk tolerances. Producers are also provided information on how and what to analyze to determine if an enterprise will be financially successful. The program then focuses on production strategy sessions.

Feuz said the key to the success of the program is that, at the end of each of the production strategy sessions, producers work through an example using strategies from earlier tools sessions.

In the last two years, all participants filling out an evaluation indicated they would recommend this program to others, said Feuz.
