Exercise video set to ‘Ragtime Cowboy Joe’ aims to increase kids’ physical activity

A children’s exercise video developed by a coalition of agencies and set to the song “Ragtime Cowboy Joe” is intended to create happy feet in elementary schools, preschools and day cares.

 “The Joe” shows 2006 Miss Rodeo USA and Wyoming native Stacy Jo Johnson of Laramie teaching the steps of the dance, and then she and youths perform the routine. It is available for viewing at www.uwyo.edu/videos/?m=521&c=181&az=C.

“‘The Joe’ is a great way for kids to have a quick break to move their bodies and energize their minds,” said Mary Kay Wardlaw, director of the Cent$ible Nutrition Program (CNP) in the UW College of Agriculture. The routine is easy and follows the ‘Ragtime Cowboy Joe’ song.”

The video was part of the Wyoming State Nutrition Action Plan, comprised of agencies funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service. They include the CNP.

The DVD packet includes a booklet and CD listing nutrition and physical activity resources for educators. “The Joe” has been distributed by the Wyoming Department of Education (WDE) to elementary schools and preschools, including Head Start.

Copies have been sent to all Wyoming public schools through the WDE. Teachers can check with their school administration for availability. Additional copies are available to schools and agencies by contacting Tamra Jackson at the WDE at (307) 777-6263 or tjacks@educ.state.wy.us. Copies have also been shared with public health offices, the Department of Family Services, CNP and Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).
