David EdmundsUW College of Agriculture Ph.D. student earns top graduate student award

David Edmunds, a graduate student in the University of Wyoming’s College of Agriculture, earned the Best Graduate Student Presentation award at the annual meeting of the Wyoming Chapter of the Wildlife Society.

The meeting was Nov. 19-21 in Sheridan.

Edmunds, of Roanoke, Va., is working on a doctorate in animal and veterinary sciences. He is studying the effects of chronic wasting disease (CWD) on white-tailed deer movements, habitat use and population.

CWD is a transmissible, neurological disease of deer, elk and moose. It is characterized by loss of body condition, behavioral abnormalities and death.

Edmunds’s adviser is Todd Cornish, an associate professor in the Department of Veterinary Sciences.

“This is a significant honor given that Dave presented in a session with 11 other highly talented and highly qualified graduate students working on wildlife management and conservation projects of extraordinary quality and caliber,” Cornish said.

“This is a major honor for our department, college and university, and the award reflects entirely on the professionalism, skills and abilities of Dave as a graduate student and young professional in this arena,” he added.
