UW presentations in Big Horn Basin show how to throttle home energy costs

How to make your home more energy efficient and reduce heating and cooling costs will be presented in Cody, Lovell, Powell and Worland in October by the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service (UW CES).

The presentations are:

Lovell – 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the Annex Building.

Powell – Noon Thursday, Oct. 9, in the Powell branch of the Park County Library.

Cody – 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, in the EOC room in the basement of the Park County Courthouse.

Worland – 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Washakie Learning Center, 1200 Culbertson Ave.  The presentations are free.

“Insulating your home properly is very inexpensive when you compare what it will save you in energy costs as well as making your home more comfortable to live in,” said presenter Dallen Smith, UW CES educator serving the Big Horn Basin.

Those attending will learn how to make their present home more energy efficient, more comfortable to live in and longer lasting. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentations. Those planning to attend are asked to bring the square footage of their home, heating costs and a calculator.

Topics include:

* Need for insulation, where to insulate, different types of insulation and R-value

* Air circulation in the attic, the need for and how to accomplish this in an existing home, and how to prevent ice dams and dry-rot

* How to remove excess moisture out of a home, particularly in the bathroom, kitchen and laundry

* Windows and doors and how they affect comfort in a home
