Big Horn Basin producers to tour Phoenix farms, ag businesses

A four-day January tour of Phoenix farms and agricultural businesses is being organized by a University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service (UW CES) educator.

“Everyone is invited to join the tour,” said Sandra Frost, UW CES educator in Powell.

The tour includes a farm raising specialty grains for the dried flower market, a research station, a grain marketing company, a corn-based ethanol plant, a large dairy, alfalfa hay production, an olive plantation and the Paloma Ranch area.

The UW CES Big Horn Basin Growers’ Tour begins Monday, Jan. 5, and concludes Thursday, Jan. 8.

“Temperatures should be in the 60s – perfect for golf or a visit to the Desert Botanical Garden (www.dbg.org),” said Frost.

Frost hopes producers will hear new ideas and see new technology that will help Big Horn Basin growers improve their operations. Tour members will make their own travel arrangements for flights to and from Phoenix. A block of rooms has been reserved for the group at the Best Western Airport Inn (www.bestwesternarizona.com/hotels/best-western-airport-inn/). Tour members will make their own hotel reservations. Tour bus transportation expenses from the hotel will be shared among tour members.

Registration deadline is Nov. 1. A $50 non-refundable registration deposit is required. Payment in full for the tour is due Nov. 14. The tour brochure is available at the Cody or Powell extension offices or at http://uwadmnweb.uwyo.edu/bighorncrops/.
