Department of Statistics Graduate Program

The University of Wyoming offers graduate programs leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Statistics.  These programs are designed to emphasize the close relation between statistical theory and the sound application of this theory to a wide variety of areas of scientific research.

Admissions

The prerequisite for admission to graduate study is an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution, including work in mathematics through calculus and six semester hours of statistics.  Test scores from the GRE and TOEFL exams are required.  The minimum score requirement for the TOEFL is 600.  Students who do not have prerequisites in mathematics and statistics may make up this deficiency at the beginning of their graduate program, however, such work does not count toward graduation requirements.  Admission requirements for the Ph.D. student, in addition to general requirements of the Graduate School, are a master's degree, a sufficiently high score on the qualifying examination and a master's thesis demonstrating ability to do independent and creative work.

The Community

Laramie is a pleasant high-plains town located between the 9,000-foot Laramie Range (20 minutes away) and the scenic Medicine Bow Mountains (40 minutes away), which range in elevation from 8,000 to 12,000 feet and have snow-covered peaks year around.  It is 130 miles north of Denver and 2,000 feet higher than that mile-high city.  The climate is cool, dry and breezy, with no smog and an abundance of bright sunshine.  Laramie is on Interstate 80, a major east-west artery, and is served by a commercial airline, buses, and railroads.

Applying

With assistantships typically starting the fall semester of every year, the application deadline is then the 1st of March of that year.  For example… If you are applying for the fall of 2009, your application needs to be submitted by the 1st of March 2009 (hard deadline).

First, applicants need to go to http://www.uwyo.edu/uwgrad for information on the Graduate School requirements and online forms that need completed.  Fill those forms out on-line and submit them on-line or download and/or print them, and mail them to the Graduate School along with any other required materials (i.e. Official Transcripts/ GRE scores/ TOEFL scores etc.).

Secondly, the Statistics Department requires 3 confidential letters of recommendation.  A minimum combined score of 1000 in the Verbal and Quantitative areas from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required for Ph.D. applicants and 900 for Master’s applicants.  Applicants for whom English is not their first language must complete the TOEFL examination.  However, financial assistance is typically provided to only those students with demonstrated communication skills in spoken English and to those whose TOEFL scores reach 600 and above.  Therefore, for all students desiring to be considered for financial assistance we recommend taking the TSE (Test of Spoken English) examination or being able to present other evidence of English speaking ability.

IMPORTANT REMINDER

There is a Language Proficiency Requirement for International Graduate Assistants that wish to be teaching assistants.  Refer to the bottom of page ix in http://uwadmnweb.uwyo.edu/UWGrad/bulletin/02-04GradBull.pdf for full details.
