The Statistical Consulting Center (SCC), a unit of the UW Department of Statistics, exists to coordinate the statistical knowledge and skills available within the Department with the subject-matter expertise of other scientists throughout the University, and to bring that combination to bear on applied research problems in diverse areas.

Under the direction of Professor Ken Gerow, the SCC can provide assistance in research design, sampling, data collection, and/or data analysis for the full range of research needs.  The initial consultation is free. Thereafter, a variety of mechanisms are available to acknowledge the contributions of statistical consulting to a given research project, including co-authorship on a scholarly publication, membership on a thesis or dissertation committee, direct compensation to the consultant at private consulting rates, subcontracting with the SCC on a grant project, or contracting with the Survey Research Center for help with data collection as well as statistical analysis.

With one of the nation's first independent departments of statistics, the University of Wyoming also has one of the few Ph.D. granting departments in the country with a primary focus on applied rather than theoretical statistics. The SCC has the full resources and facilities of a recognized research university on which to draw - library, computer infrastructure, and faculty expertise in all disciplines - as well as the faculty, staff, and graduate student resources of the Department of Statistics.  In addition, three adjunct faculty members in Statistics at UW hold full-time positions with Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. (WEST), a private consulting firm with broad experience in basic and applied ecological studies and the statistical analysis of natural resource data.

The Director of the SCC is an active participant in a cross-disciplinary network of UW faculty and graduate students engaged in the development and application of a broad array of statistical techniques for biological research. His interests include sampling techniques, experimental design, exploratory data analysis, resource allocation models, etc.  Statistics Department Head Stephen Bieber, does work in bioinformatics, multivariate statistics, and neurophysiology, using SPSS, SAS, Minitab, and other software.  Professor Richard Anderson-Sprecher has worked extensively in time series analysis, spatial statistics, and robust statistics, including applications in the biological sciences (e.g., wildlife telemetry).  Associate Professor Snehalata Huzurbazar, whose statistical areas include saddlepoint approximations, survival analysis, and Bayesian methods, has recent publications on glacier flow, bovine viral disease, and insect management strategies, among other topics.  Associate Professor Shaun Wulff specializes in linear models, mixed models, and maximum likelihood estimation. Associate Professor Tim Robinson focuses on experimental design, response surface methods, and categorical data, especially as applied to environmental questions.

The entire SCC is skilled in communicating the complexities of statistical analysis in comprehensible terms.  The faculty include recent winners of UW honors for teaching (Ellbogen award, Extraordinary Merit in Teaching), and all have extensive and successful experience in delivering workshops and training sessions to a variety of audiences.
