Windows 7 at UW
Information Technology is excited about Microsoft’s release of its newest Windows operating system – Windows 7. Computer manufacturers have started shipping new computers with 7 installed.
These pages will provide UW customers with information about the current state of Information Technology’s evaluation of Windows 7 Enterprise.
We invite readers to review the links below to understand IT’s position regarding Windows 7 Enterprise. This latest operating system is now supported by UW, however IT will continue to install and support Windows XP Professional and Windows Vista.
PC requirements for Windows 7 are expected to be similar to those for Windows Vista. Computers qualifying for Windows 7 32-bit upgrade include Dell Optiplex 610 or higher desktop computers and Dell Latitude D630 or higher laptop computers. Requirements for Windows 7 64-bit OS will vary. IT user consultants will evaluate other computers using the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor as well as component driver availability to determine upgrade qualifications. IT will not upgrade computers where drivers aren’t readily available from the vendor, where the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor reports any system resources that are less than those listed on the Microsoft site, or any component receives a score of less than 3.0.
Moving the University community and University systems to the Windows 7 platform will require changes. Testing of anti-virus, VPN, Adobe, Office, firewall, statistical and other administrative applications will be ongoing. New releases of various software applications may be required before IT can support 7 on University computers.
