The 2007 WyoSpace.com IDEA EXPO is a one-stop-shop for Wyoming small businesses
and entrepreneurs to learn more about the many small business assistance
programs sponsored by the Wyoming Business Council. In past years, the
individual components of the WBC Economic Development outreach (WSSI,
Manufacturing-Works, WSBDC, etc.) have each held their own state-wide
conference. The 2007 IdeaExpo consolidates all of these events into a single
centrally-located conference. It will be packed full of information for all
those interested in the WSSI program.

Rick Shindell has just released the latest edition of his popular “SBIR Insider” newsletter containing important information on a number of critical SBIR issues. You can read it at www.zyn.com/sbir/insider/sb-insider09-19-07.htm
Just as it has done to companies in the software,
publishing, and advertising industries, Google is becoming a thorn in the side
of venture capitalists. The owner of the world's largest Web search engine is
scooping up young tech outfits for a relative pittance, giving itself first dibs
on hot-growth technologies and in some cases boxing VC funds out of potential
big-bang acquisitions and initial public offerings. (NASVF Net News)

The concept behind Utek is
simple: Universities have lots of research that they want to sell to companies.
Utek (symbol UTK) acts as a broker, hooking up companies with technology they
need. The number of matches Utek makes goes up each year, and its operating
income has climbed from $3 million in 2004 to $32 million last year. (NASVF Net

South
Dakota State University will begin a drive in 2009 to raise more than $100
million to back the school's expanding role in the state's economy, its
president, David Chicoine, said Tuesday. The money will support student
scholarships, faculty and new buildings - all traditional goals. But underlying
the drive will be the intent to strengthen the university for its new push into
academic research and the industrial and scientific applications flowing from
it:

Once upon a
time, small business was seen solely as the domain of idiosyncratic,
iconoclastic outsiders, willing to forgo the security of corporate life to
venture out on their own. But today entrepreneurs are America's role models.
Almost everyone wants to own a business - from college students, who are signing
up for entrepreneurial courses in record numbers; to those over age 65, who are
forming more companies every year; to recent immigrants, who in 2005 started 25%
more companies per capita than native-born citizens did: (NASVF Net News)

In its Confidence Report earlier this year, angel groups belonging to the Angel Capital Association predicted that the quantity and quality of entrepreneurial investment proposals in the coming year would surpass 2006 levels. A mid-year check by the ACA shows that those predictions were not just idle boasts. Fifty percent of survey respondents expressed that their group’s deal flow had continued to increase in quality and quantity during the first six months of 2007, and most of the remaining respondents said that deal flow was similar to 2006. Angel groups also expressed optimism regarding relationships with venture capitalists. A majority of angel group leaders (73.7) thought that the relationships between VCs and angel groups had improved in the last three years. Reasons given for the improved relationship with VCs included: market segmentation, increased understanding about their respective roles in early and later-stage financing, better deal structuring, and good company referrals, among other things. Forty-four percent of the angel groups in the survey had established partnerships with VC firms to expedite co-investments or follow-on investments.
