The 2007 WyoSpace.com IDEA EXPO is a one-stop-shop for Wyoming small businesses
and entrepreneurs to learn more about the many small business assistance
programs sponsored by the Wyoming Business Council. In past years, the
individual components of the WBC Economic Development outreach (WSSI,
Manufacturing-Works, WSBDC, etc.) have each held their own state-wide
conference. The 2007 IdeaExpo consolidates all of these events into a single
centrally-located conference. It will be packed full of information for all
those interested in the WSSI program.

U.S. Senator Evan Bayh hopes to double the amount of funding awarded to small businesses through the federal Small Business Innovation Research program when it is reauthorized this year. Currently, federal agencies with budgets of more than $100 million for external research and development are required to set aside 2.5 percent for efforts by small business. Bayh wants to double that: Louisville Courier-Journal
While Utah used to be a known as a wasteland for
finding capital, the needle is moving in a way that opens opportunities, says
Will West, a member of one of two boards that oversee the Utah Fund of Funds.
West says that more than one outside venture capital company is now looking at
deals in Utah every day:

One Utah state senator is so encouraged that he is proposing that the State

The trend of states matching SBIR awards continues (Kentucky matches dollar-for-dollar both Phase I and Phase II SBIR awards). In 2007-2008 North Carolina based small businesses will be eligible to receive significant follow-on grant assistance in support of their SBIR or STTR projects. Under the One North Carolina Small Business Matching Funds Program, the State of North Carolina issues a grant of 100% of the amount a NC-based small business receives in a federal SBIR/STTR Phase I award up to a maximum of $100,000, based upon the availability of program funds. These grants are disbursed in two stages: 75% of the total goes to the company upon proof of Phase I award, and the remaining 25% goes to the company upon submission of the Phase II application and acceptance of the Phase I report by the federal SBIR/STTR program agency.
Most start-ups fail. There
are lots of reasons but the most common cause is that they develop technology
and not products. Lots of people confuse the two terms, but the distinction is
critical in start-ups. Here's why:
