2.0  Senator enzi/representative cubin release fy2008 earmark requests - for-profit companies represent 40% of the $80 million total!

Both Senator Enzi and Representative Cubin are to be commended for being among only a few in the U.S. Congress who have pre-released their earmarked budget requests for the FY2008 federal budget. The requested total of approximately $80 million is proposed to fund approximately 40 individual projects across Wyoming. Seven for-profit businesses (six past WSSI and/or SBIR awardees) are proposed to receive 40% of the total, $32 million - an average of $4.6 million. The appropriations process has multiple steps and it is not expected that all requested projects will be approved for funding.

3.0  WYOMING BUSINESS COUNCIL NAMES MARK WILLIS TO REPLACE BOB JENSEN AS COO

The Wyoming Business Council announced its selection of Mark Willis as the agency’s new Chief Operating Officer. In this position, Willis will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of staff functions of the Wyoming Business Council. Willis will start as chief operating officer on August 1, 2007. Congratulations, Mark!

“Mark’s management and broad economic development experience made him stand out from the many high quality applications that we received,” said Bob Jensen, Chief Executive Officer of the Wyoming Business Council. “We will begin the search for a new director of the Business and Industry immediately.”

“I look forward to serving the state and the Business Council in this new capacity,” Willis said. “Wyoming is on the cusp of further diversifying its economy with the Governor and Legislature investing in technology projects such as the National Center for Atmospheric Research and the data center incentive program, as well as projects encouraging the state to develop value-added energy like the University of Wyoming’s School of Energy. There are a lot of exciting challenges ahead for economic development in Wyoming. I look forward to the continued work with this team.”

Prior to accepting this position, Willis served for the past two years as director of Business and Industry Division for the Business Council. As Business and Industry Director, he coordinated and developed programs to help local organizations, such as economic development groups, chambers of commerce and local government, lay the foundation for economic development. Willis also oversaw programs to help strengthen and expand existing Wyoming business, as well as recruit new business to the state.

5.0  uw selects dean of engineering and applied science

The new University of Wyoming College of Engineering and Applied Science Dean Robert Ettema likes the pioneering spirt he finds at UW. "I got the sense that the college and the university are well poised to move ahead," says Ettema, who was hired in June. "The quality of the people here, the ambiance of the campus, the commitment of the state, the support from the alumni and the practice all seem very positive."

"Professor Ettema has an outstanding professional record as a teacher, scholar and leader in his field, and he was my first choice in a field of highly-qualified applicants for the position," says Myron Allen, UW vice president for academic affairs. "I am confident that Professor Ettema will provide exactly the leadership needed to guide the college into a future made bright by the vision and hard work of Dean Gus Plumb." Allen says Plumb will remain a member of the college's faculty.
