DON’T MESS WITH KIDS
A teacher was giving a lesson on the circulation of the blood. Trying to make the matter clearer, she said, "Now, class, if I stood on my head, the blood would run into it and I would turn red in the face, wouldn’t I?"
"Yes," the class said.
"Then why is it that when I am standing up the blood doesn't run into my feet?"
A little fellow in the back of the room shouted, "Cause your feet ain't empty."

1.0 ANDREW WILSON, USDA SPECIALIST, TO PRESENT AT WSSI CONFERENCE

The USDA is a preferred SBIR agency to many of Wyoming’s SBIR program participants. A quick look at the SBIR topics on the USDA SBIR website explains the agency’s popularity http://www.csrees.usda.gov/funding/sbir/sbir_topics.html - all of the topics relate to areas of particular interest to residents of the rural West. Everyone with an interest in these topic areas has a rare opportunity to discuss their innovative concepts one-on-one with Andrew Wilson, a USDA SBIR Program Specialist. In this position, he provides support for all 12 topic areas currently funded by USDA-SBIR. A major focus of Andrew’s work is the development of outreach strategies that aim to provide greater awareness of the benefits to agricultural and rural communities across the nation as a result of the partnership between USDA-SBIR and the over 1800 companies that have received grants.

Andrew has extensive experience in agriculture and, in particular, with small farms. From 1994-1997, Andrew worked as a Sustainable Agriculture Volunteer for the United States Peace Cops in Senegal, West Africa. After completing his service, he worked on a project in Senegal targeting the development of production techniques for vegetables and fruits designated for export to European Markets. Between 1999-2001, Andrew managed a commercial hydroponic greenhouse in New Jersey and was responsible for the year-round production of over 16 different herb crops. In 2002, Andrew managed an organic farm in Pennsylvania that has been providing produce to the Washington D.C. area for more than 30 years. In 2004, Andrew received his Master’s Degree in Entomology from the University of Delaware and subsequently began a position as the Agricultural Research Technician for the USDA’s Plant Germplasm Quarantine Office in Beltsville, MD. In August 2004, Andrew moved to his current position with the SBIR program.

The nominations for the 2006 WSSI Busch and Champion Awards are now closed. Two Busch award nominations were received but neither were considered to be eligible. Busch awards are given to those small businesses that have successfully taken their SBIR projects into the commercial marketplace. Four Champion Award nominations were received and all four individuals were found deserving as a result of their extraordinary support of and service to the WSSI mission of assisting Wyoming residents and small businesses to participate in the SBIR/STTR program. These four WSSI Champion awards will be presented at the WSSI Conference Awards Banquet at the Cheyenne Holiday Inn on the evening of Wednesday April 19, 2006.
