Summer Student Group

These are the "Pioneers"!  The first group of UW students to visit Saratov after the city was officially opened to westerners after being closed for most of the 20th century. The group arrived in June '93, just four months after the opening of Saratov. Pictured here are members of the group along with Russian friends. The location is on the bank of a Volga tributary on the island Chardym, a sports base maintained by Saratov University.

Members include (roughly left to right, although there are a number of Saratovites pictured too): Leann Graese, Dan Powers, Jennie Russell, Michelle Nielsen, Rebecca Archer, Susannah Smiley, Aaron Wall, Joseph Krafczik (Coordinator), Diane Barnson; other known folks include Maksim Sisikin, Anna Bazyleva, Rozalia Bazyleva.  If any former students recall some of the missing names, please email Coordinator and we'll update!)
