Day of Silence Scheduled for April 26

April 21, 2006 -- A recognized student organization at the University of Wyoming is leading a local crusade for a national youth movement to speak out by staying silent.

Spectrum, the UW student group providing support and resources for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender people and their allies, sponsors the UW Day of Silence scheduled Wednesday, April 26.

The group asks people who believe in equality, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression, to take a vow of silence to protest the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and the people who support them.

Organizers say the event echos the silence caused by harassment, prejudice and discrimination. Instead of speaking, participants will hand out cards that explain the reason for the Day of Silence and urge people to think about the voices they are not hearing.

Resource and information tables will be set up Friday, April 2, and the day of the event.

Schedule of events:

Tuesday, April 25:

7 p.m. -- "Shout Out Before the Shut Up," pre-silence information meeting, Wyoming Union Room 203.

Wednesday, April 26:

Noon-1 p.m. -- Silent brown bag lunch, Wyoming Union Skylight Lounge.

5-7 p.m. -- "Break the Silence Rally," Prexy's Pasture (weather permitting) or the Wyoming Union Gardens.

10 a.m.-5 p.m. -- UW Counseling Center personnel available for support and information, Rainbow Resource Center, Wyoming Union Room 106.

E-mail Spectrum at spectrum-board@uwyo.edu for more information on how to get involved and "break the silence."
