Types of Disputes

Mediation is a highly flexible process, used in many different types of disputes. Most people have heard about mediation being offered as a way to resolve conflicts arising in business negotiations, but the process is also regularly employed in community matters, family disagreements, and legal matters. While mediation is not appropriate for every dispute or every person, it is difficult to imagine any type of conflict in the university setting that does not lend itself to being resolved through informal means such as mediation.

For Students:

Roommate Disputes, including:

  • Use of room or personal objects

  • Lifestyle differences

  • Relationship Issues, including: dating relationships / past dating partners

  • Friendship disputes

  • Class projects

  • Co-worker disputes

  • Community disputes with neighbors

  • Disputes within an organization (RSO, Greek, Athletic, etc.)

  • Financial Disputes, including: rent and/or utilities

  • Personal financial agreements

  • Academic Disputes, including: grade disputes

  • Interpersonal disputes with faculty/ staff members

While the mediation process may be utilized to resolve almost any dispute, there are certain matters in which the PMC may refuse to offer mediation services. In most instances, cases involving allegations of physical or sexual misconduct, or those violations of law, which might result in felony-level review/charges, shall be denied the opportunity to resolve the dispute through mediation. In addition, mediation cannot be utilized to circumvent other mandated methods of dispute resolution without the explicit consent of all involved parties.
