Fall Outdoor Experience 2009


What is the Fall Outdoor Experience?

The Fall Outdoor Experience (FOE) is a wilderness-type orientation program exclusively for incoming freshmen. By participating in exciting outdoor adventures with us, you will meet new friends and gain a number of outdoor experiences. This is our ninth annual program and is a great way to get settled into college life by meeting new friends early and exploring the mountains, rivers and rocks of southeast Wyoming. 

How does this Work?

Participants get to move into the residence halls early, on Tuesday, August 18. On Wednesday, August 19 you will meet your group and depart to the activity area. For the next few nights, you’ll be camping outside. Each day you group will either backpack, mountain bike, cave, canoe, participate in an outdoor service project or rock climb, depending upon the activity you are enrolled. Our knowledgeable instructors will facilitate your group’s activities. You will return to campus Saturday, August 22 with a new group of friends and adventures under your belt. Prior experience is not necessary for any of the options.

The options…

Choose from any of the following adventure options:

  • Backpacking in the Snowy Range Mountains (full as of 8/10/09)
  • Caving in the Shirley Mountains (two spots left! as of 8/10/09)
  • Mountain biking southeast Wyoming (new!)
  • Rock-climbing at Vedauwoo
  • Canoeing on the North Platte River (full as of 8/1/09)
  • Wyoming Conservation Corps. Service Project (canceled)

Program Costs

Cost: $175*

*except the Conservation Corps. program ($100), which is subsidized by the Wyoming Conservation Corps and the UW Outdoor Program

Registration is underway!

The program includes transportation, meals, and group equipment (tents, technical, safety and cooking equipment). For more specific information on required personal items and equipment, please consult the equipment lists. Please note that Outdoor Experience fees are non-refundable, so make sure you can attend before applying.
