NCNS History

The NCNS was founded in 2000, with the purpose of creating and promoting an interdisciplinary forum for the exploration and discussion of contemporary health issues. Dr. Sharon A. Cumbie was its founding director.

Since its inception, the NCNS has sponsored a number of activities to promote development of a community of health research scholars including:

  • Monthly scholarship luncheon presentations
  • Annual WISE (Western Intercollegiate Scholarship Exchange) Scholar Programs
  • Grant and manuscript preparation
  • Mock reviews of grants
  • Brown Bag Presentation Series
  • Western Writers Coercion Group

In November of 2003, the NCNS acquired its first full-time director when Dr. Judith Powers joined the staff. Drs. Cumbie and Powers worked together as director and faculty coordinator during 2003/2004 to coordinate NCNS research activities. In the fall of 2004, Dr. Carol Macnee joined the Nightingale Center as the Director of Research for the Center and the College of Nursing. In Spring 2005, the center had yet another change when Dr. Powers left the School of Nursing and Terrie Wiederich joined the Center as an office associate to manage daily operations.

The Center has received support and funding for ongoing research and scholarship activity from the School of Nursing, the College of Health Sciences, the UW Office of Research, the Ellbogen Center for Teaching and Learning, and various external grants. It works closely with the School of Nursing Scholarship and Faculty Development Committee, a standing committee that coordinates support for grant writing, publication, and faculty recruitment and development and oversees the NCNS and the WISE scholar program.
