UW Firewall Tests during Spring Break 2008
3/17/08
Since August, 2007, UW has experienced periodic problems with the
firewall device that protects the university’s network from Internet
attacks. Because the firewall is critical to Internet reliability and
performance, Information Technology is planning to test two new, better
performing, firewalls during spring break. The implementation
of each firewall will result in three brief network outages during the
following periods:
Tuesday, March 18th from 1:00 am to 1:30 am
Thursday, March 20th from 1:00 am to 1:30 am
Sunday, March 23rd from 1:00 am to 1:30 am
The new firewalls are expected to be transparent. However, if serious
problems are encountered, it will be necessary to revert to the current
firewall which would result in additional brief outages.
If you have any questions or experience network problems outside of the
three 30 minute outages noted above, please call the IT help desk at
766-4357, option 1, during normal 8-5 business hours - or option 3
during non-business hours.
