UW
Information Technology Services Review
Background Information
Over the years, the University of Wyoming’s information technology operations
and infrastructure have evolved into a large distributed system. The related
investments in technology, both in financial and personnel resources, have been
substantial. With the growing significance of technology in higher education and
to the university and the potential for an associated increase in institutional
costs, it is important we have an articulated direction, aligned with
university objectives, for the best use of these resources.
The consulting firm of RSM McGladrey was selected to conduct a
campus-wide technology services review. The consultants conducted a
limited number of departmental interviews to evaluate the departmental needs for
information technology services that related to this review.
A UW Technology Services Review Planning Team (www.uwyo.edu/itsr/team.htm)
was appointed by President
Dubois to guide the review process and then assess the recommendations of the
consultants. The Team will provide a measured assessment of the alternative ways
of delivering technology services recommended by the consultants. The purpose of
this review and our assessment of it does not reflect a specific desire to
centralize operations, but to ensure that technology support and services are
cost-effective, consistent and that an integrated balance of centralized and
decentralized services is achieved.
The consulting firm of RSM McGladrey will soon release the
results of their review of UW Technology Services. The results
will initially be presented to the UW Technology Services Review
Planning Team and other groups on April 28 and 29, 2005. The
report will be posted on this Web site after April 29, 2005 for the UW community
to review and
comment to the Planning Team. The Planning Team will consider
the comments it receives in making its recommendations to the
President and Executive Council. Ultimately, it is expected that
strategic recommendations from the Technology Services Review
process will be adapted for inclusion as various action items in
the University Support Services Plan.
The Planning Team encourages your comments on the
consultants’ findings as they develop recommendations for the
university’s future direction for technology. Please use the
Comments page to forward your
comments to the Planning Team by May 15.
