Wyoming features articles about the Tetons. Articles in Annals, Summer, 1999"Preserving the Past: The Case of Grand Teton National Park" an opinion piece by Robert W. Righter Righter describes the controversies over preserving cultural artifacts in the natural setting. He argues that National Park Service officials over the years have given little attention to cultural resources in Grand Teton National Park. In fact, he charges there has been "an antipathy toward history." "To Preserve the View: A Tour in Text and Pictures" by Tamsen Emerson Hert Hert provides examples of cultural sites within Grand Teton National Park, many that were torn down or allowed to deteriorate over the years. "First Ascent of the Grand Teton: The Great Controversy" by .Mark Harvey Harvey describes the on-going controversy between William Owen and Nathaniel P. Langford (and their respective supporters) over who really was the first man to climb the Grand Teton. Both sides arrayed witnesses, but in the end, Owen appeared to have the strongest support although the author acknowledges that "no final settlement of the Langford-Owen controversy will ever be reached. "A Jackson Hole Life: Verba Lawrence" by Sherry L. Smith Lawrence spent a lifetime in Jackson Hole. Her experiences come down to us through her diary. Smith analyzes the contents and concludes that Lawrence "enjoyed incredible freedom" even though she lacked education, drive and capital. Smith writes that Lawrence "did have ... the good fortune to find her way into Jackson Hole, a place whose magnificent landscapes attracted the wealthy" for whom Lawrence worked over the years. "Wyoming Memories: Crook County's Hyena" by Ellen Crago Mueller Mueller tells the story of how a circus hyena escaped into drouth-stricken Crook County in the 1930s and how local people responded to the presence of this "exotic" in their midst. "Wyoming Portrait: Renesselaer Schuyler Van Tassel" by Shirley E. Flynn Van Tassell was a prominent Wyoming cattleman. Through three fortunate marriages, he managed to accumulate substantial ranch holdings as he socialized with congressmen and even a U. S. President.
