Former Ecuadorian President to Speak at UW

Sept. 23, 2009 -- Former president of Ecuador Jamil Mahuad will discuss "The Rise of the New Left in Latin America" Tuesday, Oct. 6, at 4 p.m. in Room 129 of the University of Wyoming Classroom Building. The event is free and open to the public.

Mahuad brings his political and academic expertise to discuss the implications of populist movements for Latin America and for U.S.-Latin American relations as he outlines a modern day agenda for the region, says Jean Garrison, director of international studies at UW.

"While president of Ecuador from 1998-2000, Mahuad pledged to bring fiscal discipline and political stability to the nation by instituting economic reform policies, focusing on reducing government spending and improving tax collection mechanisms," Garrison says. "As president, he also oversaw the historical peace agreement with Peru over a longstanding border dispute."

Mahuad is a fellow with the Center for Public Leadership at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, has served as secretary minister of Labor and Human Resources, served in Ecuador's Congress and served as mayor of Quito for six years.
