The University of Wyoming is the only four year school in a state of nearly one-half million people. It truly lives up to the statement, "A Great University in the Rockies". The University is dedicated to providing quality instruction to students, conducting valuable research programs, and serving Wyoming through a wide variety of educational and cultural programs. The University has more than 2,800 benefited faculty and staff dedicated to educating more than 13,000 students. Approximately 77 undergraduate and 85 graduate programs of study are offered with seven accredited colleges: Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, and Law, plus a School of Environmental and Natural Resources. Major research facilities provide unique opportunities for teaching, research, and service for students and faculty members, as well as for individuals throughout the world. The main campus is located in Laramie. The University also extends its educational outreach off campus. Educational degree programs also are offered jointly with Wyoming's seven community colleges. Outreach programs are provided throughout Wyoming.
The University is a land and space grant institution with off campus facilities including 28 Cooperative Extension Centers. Other facilities include an Infrared Observatory, an Environmental Biology Laboratory, Atmospheric Science Facilities, Family Practice Centers and a Park Service Research Center in the Tetons.

Benefits make up a substantial part of the compensation received from the University of Wyoming. The benefits to which staff are entitled are summarized in this brochure. This summary is for purposed of illustration only.
Full-time staff employees accrue sick leave at the rate of 12 days per year of service. Part-time employees working 50% time or more earn sick leave on a pro rata basis.
Exempt Staff--Full-time 12 month exempt benefited employees earn vacation credit at the rate of 22 days annually.
Non-Exempt Staff--Full-time 12 month non-exempt benefited employees earn vacation credit as follows: 0-2 years - 10 days; 3-6 years - 16 days; 7 or more years - 22 days.
The accrual balance cannot exceed 352 hours. Part-time employees working 50% time or more earn annual leave on a pro rata basis.

The purpose of the tuition waiver is to encourage employees to take advantage of the educational opportunities available at the University. The program allows for tuition waiver of 3 credit hours Fall, Spring and Summer Semesters for full-time employees; 1 1/2 credit hours for part-time. Half priced tuition is available for spouses of full-time employees, and 1/4 for spouses of part-time employees.
Insurance coverage for medical expenses and loss of income due to on-the-job injury is provided by the University of Wyoming for all employees.
The University is a member of the Employee's Group Insurance for health, dental, and life benefits. The State contributes approximately 85% of each employee's and dependent's insurance premiums at the lowest deductible , and also offers flexible spending accounts, and medical and dependent care reimbursable accounts.
DEDUCTIBLE AMOUNT - Option I-$350 per person/$700 per family; Option II-$750 per person/$1,500 per family, Option III-$2500 per person (employee only)
WHO IS ELIGIBLE - Employees, dependents (wife or husband, unmarried children under age 19; unmarried children between the ages of 19 and 23 provided they are enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited educational or vocational institution)
The University utilizes Standard Life Insurance Company for life insurance coverage. This plan has a maximum benefit of $50,000 on Life, and $20,000 for Accidental Death and Dismemberment. Additional life insurance is also available from TIAA/CREF and WRS.
This plan provides guaranteed income in the event of extended disability after 90 days. It covers accidents and sickness both on and off the job. The monthly benefit while totally disabled shall be equal to 66-2/3% of monthly compensation to a maximum monthly benefit of $7,000. The employer pays 100% of the premium.
All employees participate in Social Security (FICA). In addition, participation in either the Wyoming Retirement System or TIAA/CREF is compulsory for all employees. The State contribution is 11.25% of gross salary. There is no employee contribution.
403b and 457b tax sheltered annuities ($20 per month matched by the State) , unemployment compensation, family and medical leave, bereavement leave, military leave, discounts on athletic season tickets, library use, use of physical activity facilities and meat purchases.
Cultural activities include concerts, plays, and museums. There is an excellent library system. There are also special events and celebrations held throughout the school year. Multi-recreational activity centers and sports facilities offer indoor swimming pools, running tracks, weight rooms, and basketball, tennis, and racquetball/squash courts which are available to employees.
The University Bookstore provides a variety of services and products for students and university employees. The bookstore offers textbooks, general books, office products, gifts, insignia sportswear, greeting cards, and many other items. Photo developing, gift wrapping, special ordering for books, UPS, and FAX are a few of the services offered by the bookstore.
The University's Transportation and Parking Services has a large selection of vehicles for individuals needing transportation for departmental business. TransPark is professionally staffed with employees in the reservation and maintenance offices.
All employees are issued one University of Wyoming Campus Express/ID card for a nominal charge. This card, in addition to being an identification card, can also be used as a debit card on campus and a long distance calling card. The debit card feature offers convenience and flexibility for employees making purchases on campus. Cards are available for dependents.
There are a variety of food services offered on campus to employees and departments. Employees can select meal plans or ala carte dining.
Both the University and the community have much to offer. Laramie, at an elevation of 7,200 feet is located between two ranges of the Rocky Mountains. It is home to over 28,600 people. Outdoor activities include skiing (X-country and downhill), fishing, hunting, camping, boating, snowmobiling, hiking, and bicycling, all within a one hour drive from the campus. Laramie residents have quick access to a vast acreage of public lands including national and state parks, wilderness areas, state and national forests and state game refuges, federal lands, hundreds of miles of creeks and rivers, and many lakes.
The Laramie Parks and Recreation system has city sports activities such as basketball, softball, volleyball, and others for youth and adults. The city has a modern public library, excellent schools, shopping, restaurants, and a large number of child care centers as well as private baby-sitters, preschools, and nursery schools.
Summer days are warm and nights comfortable with the hottest month being July with average high of 81 and average low of 48. Snow in the winter is typical. The coldest month is January with average high of 32 and average low of 9.
There are a number of privately owned and managed apartments, houses, mobile homes, and townhouses in and around Laramie. These range from large complexes to basement apartments. Rents vary depending on location, features, and size with the average rental price $400-$700/per month. Newcomers from either coast may find housing costs lower than they have experienced with the average cost of $164,000. The average home rental is $700-$1,000/per month. (costs are estimated)
Wyoming has a very favorable tax climate with no personal income tax, no corporate income tax, 6% state and local sales tax, and residential property tax at 9.5% of assessed rate. This results in an average annual property tax of $994 on a $164,000 home.
Laramie public schools consist of seven elementary schools, one charter school, one junior high school, and two high schools (one is an alternative school for 9th through 12th graders). The Albany County School district also has seven rural schools. The student-teacher ratio is 19 to 1.
In addition to the public schools, there are several private schools. The Wyoming Center for Teaching and Learning is operated by the Albany County School District in cooperation with the University of Wyoming, for student pre-school through ninth grade. St. Laurence School is a parochial school operated by St. Laurence O'Toole Catholic parish offering grades kindergarten through sixth grade. The Seventh Day Adventist School is a parochial school sponsored by the Laramie Seventh Day Adventist Church. It offers grades one through eight. The Laramie Christian School is a private non-denominational school offering instruction for pre-school through sixth grade. The Open School is a private non-profit corporation started in 1970 by Laramie area residents. It offers a pre-school and kindergarten.
Albany County's labor market consists primarily of non-manufacturing (95%) with 23% in service which includes education, 30% commercial, 38% government (state, federal, and local), and 1% agriculture. Wyoming is a "right to work" state.
