PURPOSE

 

Assists in the supervision and operations of the Central Energy Plant within the Physical Plant department; participates in performing skilled duties associated with Central Energy Plant facility operations.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

Assist in the supervision, coordination, daily operation and maintenance of the Central Energy Plant; give recommendations to Manager regarding plant operations, maintenance, staff, equipment, and supply requests.

 

Assist in planning and scheduling work assignments; train, supervise and advise support staff in work methods and procedures.

 

Inspect departmental work and report status of projects and quality of work performed.

 

Assist in preparing job cost estimates to determine labor hours and materials required; order parts as directed.

 

Read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, blueprints, logic ladder diagrams, and sketches to determine equipment, labor, and materials required and appropriate methods of installation.

 

Supervise or perform journey level work.

 

Maintain safe work area to ensure compliance with safety regulations; provide safety training.

 

Repair plant controls and instruments using a variety of hand tools and test instruments; make adjustments for safe and efficient turbine, chiller, generator and auxiliary equipment operation.

 

Supervise or assist with the maintenance and repair of plant equipment, tools and systems including cooling systems, pumps, electric motors, fans, air-compressors, ignites, water softeners, coal feeders, traveling grates, coal and ash handling equipment, pollution control, and all boiler instrumentation, controls and interlocks.

 

Conduct periodic tests on boilers, condensing towers and circulated water to determine need for chemical treatment.

 

File shift logs and communicate shift history to Manager; maintain plant operations, inventory, and maintenance records.

 

Schedule coal deliveries and ash hauls.

 

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

 

Receive University trouble calls before and after regular work hours; relay calls properly for the appropriate response.

 

Act as Manager in their absence and as requested.

 

May weld pipe and equipment.

 

Keep abreast of current technology and materials of trade.

WORKING CONDITIONS

 

Power Plant facility and in/out door environment; exposed to hazards associated with power and hand tools, dust, fumes, high pressure steam, high temperatures and confined spaces; regularly subject to external environmental conditions such as cold, heat, dust, snow, or noise and fumes from equipment or chemicals.
