Textiles and Merchandising

Students who enjoy working with fabrics, clothing, or home furnishings and are interested in color, design, and business should choose textiles and merchandising as a course of study.  It is a diverse and competitive field in which individuals plan, provide, and promote apparel, furnishings, and related goods desired by consumers.  This options offers knowledge of business principles within the fashion and interior design industries.  Students who are especially interested in home furnishings might consider and interior design minor.  Those who are especially interested in fashion design and illustration might consider the apparel design minor.

Courses in textiles, design, apparel, interiors, and consumer studies are required.  Course work also includes studies in marketing, management, computers, art, and advertising.  In addition to theoretical study, practical on-the-job training is encouraged through real-world projects with clients.  Opportunities for internships and field experiences are available and encouraged.  Study tours are available every other summer to Italy, Scotland, or England.
