Art to Wear Exhibit Opens

When does a coat become a piece of art?  According to Donna Brown of the University of Wyoming’s College of Agriculture, “Wearable art is a great medium to work with; it can only be defined by the artist.”

Brown, a professor in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, defines her art in a one-woman show titled “Caleidoscope Couture: Art to Wear by Dr. Donna Brown.” The exhibit runs from April 29 to Aug. 11 in the loggia of the American Heritage Center (AHC) on the UW campus.

An opening reception is from 5-8 p.m. April 29. The public is invited.

The pieces in Brown’s collections of wearable art include a wedding set, dresses, skirts, coats, jackets, vests and more.  All of the works are handmade and designed by Brown.  Some of the techniques displayed will include hand dyeing, quilting, machine-made lace and beading.

“The quality and artistry of each piece translates Dr. Brown’s creative spirit and showcases her artistic passion,” says William Hopkins, manager of collections at the AHC.

The AHC is the university’s repository of manuscript and special collections, rare books and UW’s archives. Students and scholars from around the globe use these collections for research. The AHC also sponsors a wide range of scholarly and popular programs including lectures, concerts, symposia, and exhibits. Housed in a landmark building shared with the UW Art Museum, access to the AHC is free and open to all.
