UW agriculture students receive honors

 

            University of Wyoming College of Agriculture students recently received awards from the Wyoming Chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta, the honor society of agriculture.

            In addition to the awards presented March 4 at the Animal Science/Molecular Biology Building on the UW campus in Laramie, the chapter honored Saratoga producer Kurt Bucholz with its outstanding agriculturalist award, and the award of merit was presented to Dr. Taylor Haynes of Cheyenne. Haynes, a rancher near Cheyenne and a retired physician, is also a member of the UW Board of Trustees.

            Receiving outstanding student awards were (student, hometown, and department):

            Outstanding male freshman – Ryan Farthing, Cheyenne, agricultural and applied economics

            Outstanding female freshman – Caitlin Blackburn, Cody, animal and veterinary science

            Outstanding sophomore – Aaron Ostrom, Cheyenne, plant sciences

            Outstanding junior – Katherine Rogers, Kemmerer, molecular biology

            Outstanding seniors – Heather Grimm, Dumont, Colo., animal and veterinary science, and Loren Racich, Pinedale, renewable resources.

            Outstanding master’s student – Terrill Weston, Lander, animal science

            Outstanding doctoral student – Rebecca Atkinson, Laramie, animal science

            Gamma Sigma Delta also presented departmental awards. Winners and criteria were:

            Agricultural communications (based on GPA, extracurricular activities, academic achievements and experiences) – freshman honor book, Stephanie Budd, Laramie; sophomore honor book, Jessica Foster, Veteran; and senior honor book, Lacey Witowski, Jackson.

            Agricultural and applied economics (academic performance) – honor book, Ryan McConnaughey, Riverton; Western Agricultural Economics Association Outstanding Senior Award, Rebecca Freeburn, Fort Laramie; and certificate of excellence, Jay Blankenship, Miles City, Mont.

            Animal and veterinary science (GPA, extensive involvement in departmental and university activities and work experience) –animal science honor books, Lynn Franzkowiak, Schaller, Iowa, and Kendal Bauman, Carpenter; veterinary science honor books, Grimm and Sarah Riker, Dubois; and veterinary science outstanding senior, Grimm.

            Family and consumer sciences (GPA, contributions to department, college or university and activities) – dietetics honor book, Lindsay Suchor, Gillette; and professional child development honor book, Eleanor Frye, Fort Collins, Colo.

            Molecular biology and microbiology (GPA, and participation and performance in departmental research programs) – microbiology honor book, Ayme Ahrens, Sidney, Neb., and Tyler Weaver, Gillette; molecular biology honor book, Sara Babcock, Saratoga, and Alyson Smith, Greybull; and Irene Rosenfeld Award, Chiwah R. Lam, Hong Kong.

            Plant sciences (highest GPAs) – plant science honor books, Tabitha Christner, Wauneta, Neb., and Tyler Most, Ogallala, Neb.

            Renewable resources (highest GPAs) – soils honor book, Trapper Most, Ogallala, Neb.; and entomology honor book, Amanda Roe, Casper.
