Distance Programs

We offer one distance degree option within our Family and Consumer Sciences major: Professional Child DevelopmentIt requires an existing associate’s degree (A.A. or A.S., not A.A.S.).

Professional Child Development requires an existing associate of arts or associate of science degree in child development, early childhood education, or a related field. Students who do not have a degree in a closely related field can still apply if they have an existing associate's degree (A.A. or A.S., not A.A.S.) and the following courses:

  • EDEC 1020 Introduction to Early Childhood Education
  • SOC 1000 Introduction to Sociology
  • PSYC 1000 Introduction to Psychology
  • A college-level math course that fulfills the QA requirement.
  • A college-level writing course that fulfills the WA requirement.

Once you have applied and your transcripts have been received, your packet will be reviewed.  Transcripts will not be analyzed prior to application to the program.

The Family and Consumer Sciences Department requires all students in the Professional Child Development to complete a background check within the first semester of acceptance.  Failure to do this or evidence of a felony will result in the student being dropped from the program.

We also offer the Early Childhood Program Director CertificateIt is designed to:

  • Fit Wyoming’s Professional Career Development Competency Wheel and the Professional Development Career Lattice.
  • Fit the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s Guidelines for the Preparation of Early Childhood Professionals (2003).
  • Allow a variety of paths to certification.
  • Fit the on-campus and distance delivery of the FCSC bachelor’s degree.

Courses not only satisfy certification requirements for many states but also meet many of the requirements of a bachelor’s degree in family and consumer sciences. Additionally they fit professional development for home providers and daycare professionals. Students who feel that they have met competencies or specific courses through methods other than coursework completion must contact the Outreach School after acceptance into the program and pay $80 per course/competency for prior learning assessment (portfolio) review.
