Child Development (4)

Incorporates classroom instruction with laboratory application of child development research and theory in physical, intellectual and social/emotional domains.  Emphasizes early childhood years.  Prerequisite: sophomore standing

FCSC 2122

Laboratory (1)

This laboratory observation course is designed for students with a background in child development theory.  Students will learn child observation techniques, how to write laboratory reports, and how to apply them to evaluating a child’s development in all domains

FCSC 2131

Family Relations (3)

This course provides an overview of current research on family relations, family theory, and family dynamics across the lifespan.  An ecological and family system approach will be used, with particular focus paid to the understanding of contextual influences on families.

FCSC 4124

Families of Children with Special Needs (3)

Deals with importance of including family in the process of early intervention with the preschool child with special needs.  Prerequisite:  junior/senior standing or consent of instructor. (Normally offered fall semester)

FCSC 4130

Internship in Child Development (6-8)

Provides professional child development and early childhood education majors with an in-depth experience working with children from birth to age five.  Students will gain experience including planning lessons, teaching, assessing children and conducting parent conferences.  Prerequisites:  FCSC 2121; FCSC 4128 or EDEC 3210; junior status.  (Offered all semesters)

Advanced study of the cognitive, social-emotional, communicative, moral, and physical/motor development of children and adolescents, with an emphasis on cultural and contextual influences on development.

EDCI 1020

Introduction to Early Childhood Education (3)

Introduces the student to the field of early childhood education through lecture discussion, observation, and participation.  The student will be exposed to different programs in the community.  Topics to be explored include components of quality programs, child development theory, curriculum development, learning environments, classroom management, parent-teacher relationships, importance of play, and teaching as a profession.


 

EDCI 1100

Observation and Guidance of Young Children (2)

Effective methods of observation and guidance to meet the children’s needs individually and in groups with an emphasis on promoting a positive and constructive climate in the early childhood setting.  Topics include assessments, recording behaviors, planning environments, materials and equipment, scheduling, discipline and parent-teacher communication.  Prerequisites:  EDCI 1020, FCSC 2122, PSYC 2300, or permission of instructor.

EDCI 1105

Observation and Guidance of Young Children Lab (1)

Supervised experience in the observation and guidance of young children at an early childhood center.  Offered on campus spring semester.  Prerequisite:  EDCI 1100 (or concurrent enrollment).

EDEC 1020

Introduction to Early Childhood Education (3)

Introduces students to the field of early childhood education through lecture, discussion, observation and participation.  The student will be exposed to different programs currently in operation in the community and region.  Special emphasis will be placed on evaluating early childhood education as a career.


 

EDEC 3000

Observing Young Children (3)

The general goal of the course is to introduce students to observation and recording techniques appropriate for assessing the growth and development of young children in the school setting.  A secondary goal is to understand how observation and recording techniques can facilitate curriculum planning and parent-teacher conferences.  Prerequisites:  EDEC 1020 and FCSC 2121.

EDEC 3220

School Programs for Young Children (Math/Science & Humanities Methods) (3)

Describes, identifies, and examines programs and best practices of teaching young children in school settings.  Lecture and discussion are supported by a two-hour practicum in an early childhood school setting.  Prerequisites:  EDEC 1020, 3000 and FCSC 2121.

EDEC 4320

Oral and Written Language Acquisition (3)

Introduces the student to the nature of language development as it pertains to oral and written communication in education.  Recent research in the areas of oral and written language acquisition is compared and contrasted.  Implications for facilitating the development of all language modes in educational settings is emphasized.  Prerequisites:  EDST 2000 and junior class standing or consent of instructor.


 

EDEC 5210

Early Childhood Education (2-3)

This is an advanced professional course for students interested in current practices, curriculum, and research in the field of early childhood education.  Prerequisite:  B.A. in elementary education or consent of instructor.

PSYC 2300

Child Psychology (3)

Explores development and behavior of children from conception to adolescence, emphasizing major roles played by maturation and learning.  Acquaints students with the area of child study in terms of research.
