Family and Community Services

The Family and Community Services Option is intended for those who would like a career with a prevention programs focus.  It is currently offered on campus, and through our distance option.  It was developed following a survey of employers in five states who hired individuals to work with families:  hospitals, adoption agencies, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, SAFE houses, state departments of family services, state departments of health, senior centers, youth crisis centers, non-profit agencies, and others.  Our degree option allows students to not only understand and apply family systems theory, but also to gain experience in working with non-profits and boards, delivering workshops and trainings, and putting their skills into practice through an internship.

Upon completion of our degree program, students have the option of submitting their transcripts and materials to the National Council on Family Relationships to become a Certified Family Life Educator.  Our department was the first in the nation for program approval.  For information on this certification, go to http://www.ncfr.org.
