Campus Shorin-Ryu & Kobudo Club Registration Information



To participate in the UW Campus Shorin-Ryu Karate & Kobudo Club, sign up will take place Monday (Aug. 30th), Tuesday (Aug. 31st) and Thursday (Sept. 2nd) from 6:45 to 7 pm in the Education Building Gym north of the Half Acre Gym. Club members have an opportunity to learn a variety of martial arts and traditions including Okinawan Shorin-Ryu karate, kobudo (ancient farm implements used in self-defense), iado (samurai techniques), jujutsu, self-defense, women’s self-defense, traditions, meditation, and many other arts (No Experience Necessary).

Over the past 27 years, the UW Campus Shorin-Ryu Karate & Kobudo Club has been one of the more active and is one of the largest clubs on campus. Hundreds of students, staff and faculty have now trained in traditional martial arts through the club. A number of campus (sororities, society of women engineers, Air Force ROTC, etc) and off campus groups have also received special training in the club, and club members have also presented very popular half-time demonstrations at past UW basketball games (see photos). Members also taught very popular beginning karate and jujutsu through the Department of Kinesiology in the past.

A minimum of 6 classes in traditional martial arts are taught each week during the school year as well as special weekend clinics - Comparable programs can only be found at a few other universities in the world.

The club is affiliated with prestigious international organizations and includes a core of black belt instructors led by a hall of fame inductee and the highest ranked martial artist in the world in Seiyo Shorin-Ryu Karate. Membership is open to all UW faculty, staff, students and their spouses.
