Aug. 1, 2007 -- Eight college undergraduate students from across the United States spent 10 weeks this summer pursuing independent study research projects at the University of Wyoming.

The students participated in the ninth REU (Research Education for Undergraduates) Summer Research Program in the Energy Sciences, offered to outstanding undergraduate students majoring in chemical sciences. The UW Department of Chemistry hosts the annual program.

This program offers students an opportunity to pursue a faculty-directed independent research project and to participate in an active research group, says David Anderson, associate professor of chemistry who directs the program.

Students participate in seminars on current research topics and attend professional development workshops. They present their own research projects at a symposium attended by UW faculty and students and faculty mentors from the participants' home institutions.

Students in this year's program conducted hands-on chemistry research related to energy science.

"As an example, students conducted research on how to make carbon-based fuels cleaner, new materials for solar energy utilization and new hydrogen storage systems for hydrogen fuel cell applications," Anderson says.

Participating students, listed by hometown and their respective colleges are:

Cheyenne -- Charity Stradley, Laramie County Community College.
Chippewa Falls, Wis. -- Curtis Rykal, University of Wisconsin.
Cullowhee, N.C. -- Laura Cleveland, Western Carolina University.
Fort Collins, Colo. -- Allisa Schunter, University of Wyoming.
Helena, Mont. -- Rose Donohoue, Pacific University.
Lakeland, Minn. -- Tom Mahle, Macalester College.
Monroe, N.C. -- Karla Wright, Western Carolina University.
Springfield, Ill. -- Laura Pinelo, Illinois Wesleyan University.
