Graduate program

The Master's Degree in communication and mass media is grounded in the behavioral science tradition. It is conferred in recognition of the attainment of independent scholarship in the field and not simply the passing of a specific number of courses or time in residence at the University. The attainment of this independent scholarship is witnessed by the student's performance on a qualifying examination, preparation and defense of a thesis, general performance in all courses, and his or her suitability for professional work, for research, and for teaching as may be pertinent.

To aid the student in attaining the requisite level of independent scholarship, certain courses are provided by the department. Some of these are prescribed and the student will not be evaluated as a scholar until he or she has successfully completed these prescribed courses. As most of the required courses are offered only during the regular academic year, it is not possible to earn the M.A. degree, or even a very substantial portion of it, during summer sessions only. However, students may commence graduate training during the summer session by taking courses to repair deficiencies in their background training if they have been admitted to the program for the following fall semester.
