Wyoming The city of Laramie has a population of approximately 26,800 people. The city covers an area of eight square miles and is at an altitude of 7,165 feet. The climate is varied but generally cool. The people of the city have access to six public parks as well as to the University's 18 hole golf course, tennis courts, handball courts, baseball diamonds, football, soccer, and track fields. Laramie's transportation needs are met by a commuter airline and an interstate bus company. Laramie is located about 140 miles north of Denver, 69 miles north of Ft. Collins, and 49 miles west of Cheyenne. There are abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation. Two recreational areas maintained by the Forest Service are located near Laramie. One is at Pole Mountain, 14 miles east of Laramie. The other is at the Medicine Bow National Forest, 32 miles west of Laramie. Both areas provide skiing, fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, and picnicking. In addition, Denver and major Colorado ski areas are quite accessible. Also, the University provides a multitude of recreational and cultural events for the community. Founded in 1886, the University of Wyoming is the only four-year institution of higher education in the state. On the Laramie campus, which covers 780 acres, are the colleges of Agriculture, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Health Sciences, Human Medicine, and the Law School. Of the 12,500 students enrolled at the University about 2,600 are graduate students. The Department of Communication and Mass Media is housed on the fourth floor of Ross Hall. Departmental facilities include faculty, staff and graduate student offices; a video laboratory on the first floor of Ross Hall; a photography laboratory in the basement of Ross Hall; a computer laboratory located between the CMJR and Sociology Departments on the fourth floor of Ross Hall; and research laboratory on the second floor of Old Biochemistry Building.
