AdmissionGeneral
Admission
Review of applications will begin Feb. 25 for admission the
following fall. The Department, however, encourages students to begin submitting materials
as soon as possible in order to make sure his or her file is complete. Most accepted
applicants begin their studies in the fall semester although in special circumstances
applicants are admitted in the spring term. The application materials include the
application itself, transcripts, GRE scores, and three letters of recommendation.
Applicants who have strong letters of recommendation, whose undergraduate grade average is
above 3.0, and whose verbal and quantitative GRE scores total at least 900 are competitive
for admission to the master's program. It is strongly suggested that an applicant have a
strong, well-rounded undergraduate major in communication or a communication related
field. If you are interested in applying for the communication and mass media graduate
program, you may print out, complete and return the online application
form.
Application Procedure for International Students
The application and admission procedures for international students are more complex than
for students who are citizens of the United States. At the time of application, the
international student must provide transcripts that are in English (or have English
translations attached), GRE scores, and a TOEFL and TSL score. If the student's
application is successful, then he or she must complete a statement of financial security
verifying that support funds are guaranteed. If the international student is awarded
financial support through the University (Graduate Assistant, non-resident tuition waiver,
etc.) the amount of the award can be included as part of the guaranteed funds. Since
communication is a language intensive discipline and all assistantships involve teaching
in communication related courses, international students must achieve at least a minimum
600 on the TOEFL test, a high score on the TSL test, and complete a semester of graduate
study to be considered for financial assistance.
Admission Criteria
Since admission to the master's program is competitive, criteria for successful
application can be seen in the qualifications of students recently accepted. Of
approximately 100 students who inquired or applied for the program since 1990, 30 were
admitted. Ordinarily, average GRE scores of 500 and an undergraduate grade point average
of 3.00 should be considered minimum cutoff levels for potential applicants. With
exceptionally high GRE scores or GPA the Department will consider admitting a student with
a slight weakness on one of the other criteria (on provisional status).
Prospective students are welcome to visit the Department during the admissions process.
The Director of Graduate Studies, Dr. Michael Brown, is also available to visit with prospective students
either face-to-face or on the telephone.
