Dr. Chia-Fang (Sandy) Hsu is a new assistant professor in the COJO Department. She comes to UW from Northern State University, S.D., where she taught for a year. She received a Ph.D. from Washington State University in 2002.
Hsu also received a master’s degree in communication from WSU in 1997 and a bachelor’s in journalism from Chinese Culture University in 1995. 

At WSU, she received the Teaching Assistant Excellence Award, Research Excellence Award in the social science division, and the Outstanding Research Assistant Award from the School of Communication. 

Her areas of expertise include communication apprehension and cross-cultural communication. Specifically, her research focuses on the nature/nurture issues in the development of communication apprehension and other related traits. She is also interested in how individuals' communication traits affect their interactions with friends, family, and people from another culture.

She has published articles in Communication Reports, Communication Research Reports and Communication Quarterly.


Since starting work at UW last fall, Hsu has taught Introduction to Communication Research and a graduate-level course, Research in Communication.
